PREPARING TO JOIN A LESSON
It's always daunting doing something new but be assured that there are easy things you can do.
 
Nordic Walking is an extension of 'ordinary walking' so you can prepare yourself by taking short walks, at a comfortable but brisk pace, several times a week.
 
When you walk to the bus, around the shops, do you slouch or walk tall? Try to become aware of your posture, and how you move.
 
If you have stairs - use them. As many times as you can.
 
March on the spot several times a day if you can - or while watching your favourite TV programme, if the weather outdoors puts you off.
 
If you book for an individual training session, or a small group training, you will be sent details of some preparatory exercises and warm ups to get you really fired up with enthusiasm and confidence.

EQUIPMENT YOU WILL NEED
  • A good pair of walking shoes or trainers, which allow flexion of the foot. There are purpose made Nordic Walking shoes available.
  • Layers on top and comfortable trousers or shorts. You will soon warm up, but wont want a shower of rain to put you off, so a suitable coat or jacket.
  • NORDIC WALKING POLES. These are specially designed, very lightweight and strong. Possibly the most expensive piece of equipment you will need. They need to be selected by a trained person to an individual's needs - height, leg length, shoulder mobility, stride length are all factors. I have both Lekki poles and exel poles. My preference is for exel as I find the handle shape much more comfortable. I have a selection of different sizes of poles to use in training sessions, before you need to buy a pair.
